Surgery as the most effective way to treat cataract has helped many patients to see the light again. However, implantation of an intraocular lens does not necessarily "fit" - patients may experience problems such as farsightedness, myopia or astigmatism, and it is difficult to remove glasses. Today, a new type of intraocular lens, the light-adjustable refractive power lens, can be fine-tuned for different patients to provide good vision for the patient.
According to reports, this intraocular lens has a special molecular structure: in the silica polymer matrix with a cross structure, the light body is evenly buried. When irradiated with ultraviolet light, the light body migrates to the polymerization region, causing a change in crystal thickness, thereby achieving diopter adjustment.
Bobby Qureshi, a doctor at the London Eye Hospital, recently launched the first batch of light-adjustable refractive intraocular lenses in the UK. During the operation, the doctor cuts a 2 mm long incision in the cornea or sclera of the patient's eye, then projects into the ultrasound probe to crush the opaque lens and aspirate it, and finally implants a light-tunable refractive lens. The cataract surgery time with a light-tunable refractive lens is comparable to the time of implantation of a normal lens (generally around 10 to 15 minutes).
According to Qureshi, patients can feel significant improvement in vision within a few hours, and some patients have better postoperative vision than before. According to the procedure, the patient needs to return to the lens and adjust for diopter diopter after 10 to 25 months of implantation. After examination by the doctor, the patient rests the lower jaw on a fixture and allows the lens to be exposed to ultraviolet light for about 90 seconds. After a few days, they accept the necessary fine-tuning until the final "finalization". Because the lens is susceptible to UV light before it is "set", patients need to wear protective glasses. In addition, patients need to use antibiotics and anti-inflammatory eye drops for 4 to 6 weeks.
Gil Balver, a 61-year-old part-time nurse, was one of the first patients in the UK to receive a light-tunable refractive intraocular lens. "Doctor Qureshi explained to me the knowledge of light-tunable lens, and I also learned about it myself." Balfour said that she immediately felt vision improvement after surgery; now I can see the last row of the eye chart.
The British "Daily Mail" quoted Qureshi as saying that "you can tell patients who have undergone cataract surgery that they will have better vision after surgery. This was difficult to achieve in the past." The UK will need about £3,000 (about $4,943) for this operation. Shanghai Medical Device Industry Association
