Global Times reported on December 28 that China launched the “100,000 People's Genome Project in Chinaâ€, which is the first major national plan implemented by China in the field of human genome research and the largest human genome project in the world.
Scientists hope to study the relationship between disease health and genetic inheritance by mapping the Chinese fine genome map.
The project will collect genetic data of nine ethnic groups including the Zhuang and Hui nationalities of the Han nationality and the population of more than 5 million.
Dr. Yu Jun, deputy director of the Beijing Institute of Genomics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, pointed out that the project will create a “health contrast†library to further clarify the link between specific genes and specific diseases.
The project will be completed in four years, making it the largest and fastest genetic engineering project in the world.
The project was funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology of China and the budget was not disclosed. Gene sequencing and its enterprises will usher in a new wave of profit.
