According to a study published on May 28th by Nature-Communication, an oncolytic virus (a virus that targets cancer cells) effectively prolongs the survival of mice in two different types of brain tumor models. These findings prompted researchers to use the virus to conduct a long-term clinical trial.

Child brain tumors such as high-grade gliomas and diffuse endogenous pons gliomas are difficult to treat and are genetically different from adult tumors. The treatment of high-grade glioma patients is surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, but surgery is not suitable for children with diffuse endogenous pons glioma. The US Food and Drug Administration has approved the use of oncolytic viruses for the treatment of melanoma, and it has now been shown that the Delta-24-RGD virus is effective and safe for adult patients with glioma.

Marta Alonso and colleagues at the Navarre Health Institute in Spain used high-grade gliomas and diffuse endogenous glial glioma models to test the effectiveness of the Delta-24-RGD virus. They found that the survival time of the experimental mice was prolonged in four different cancer models compared to untreated mice. Moreover, no viral protein was detected in long-lived mice, which means that this method is safe.

Further studies have shown that the virus triggers an immune response in mice, which means that activation of the immune system contributes to an anti-cancer response. The above findings indicate that this method can be used to treat children with such tumors, but this requires experimental verification . (Jin Nan)
