In 2013, the subtitle of the annual CIO White Paper was “Men in the Medical World”, which illustrates the tremendous changes that the HITECH Act has brought to the lives of CIOs. Why are they worth millions? The title refers not to their remuneration, but to the CIO's control of large budgets and investments in large-scale electronic medical record deployments. The survey also revealed that the vast majority of CIOs are male, so the title is “a man with a million dollars in the medical profession”.

This year's survey shows that the situation has changed.

Strikingly, the 2014 survey showed an increase in the number of female respondents. Although we are not sure why, we think this is a sign that is worthy of recognition. We also see that the proportion of highly educated people has increased from 61% to 73%.

The most recent W-2 tax return table shows that in terms of compensation, 2014 was only slightly higher than 2013 ($2,000). According to the level of education, CIOs with a Ph.D. (ten in our sample) are 42% higher than those with a master's degree and 68% higher than an undergraduate degree. The average CIO with a graduate degree is $286,000, which is 18% higher than those without the degree.

We note that there are gender differences in education: 66% of women surveyed have graduate degrees and 76% of men have postgraduate degrees.

Summary: Female CIOs are more socially talented

Analysis of the above findings shows that men are 16% more likely than women, and men have a graduate degree of 15% higher than women. Observing data for men and women, graduates with a postgraduate degree are about 18% higher than those without a degree. Based on this information, we can reasonably conclude that there is no artificial bias in the lower pay of female CIOs, and the educational level is the determining factor for the salary of all male and female CIOs.

Although the study pointed out that the most important factor affecting pay is education, we also noticed that only 7% of male and female CIOs believe that “high academic qualifications will help them cope with future challenges.”

We expect more women to hold CIO positions in the future, and the pay gap will shrink rapidly. 13% of female respondents indicated that they are currently pursuing other qualifications or higher education, or plan to study within one year. These trends are positive, and we expect that CIOs will have more powerful and rich directions in the future.
