Recently, scientists have found that cervical cancer can be prevented by drugs commonly used in AIDS.
The University of Manchester's husband and wife research team found that AIDS drugs can kill the human papillomavirus, the pathogen that causes cervical cancer. They found that lopinavir reduced 90% of precancerous cells without side effects.

The drug's clinical trial was conducted at the Kenya National Hospital (KNH) in Nairobi, Kenya. The Hampsons of the University of Manchester, in conjunction with Dr. Innocent Orora of KNH, conducted the trial, which included 40 women with mild and severe precancerous lesions of the cervix.
Lopinavir is an antiviral drug commonly used for oral treatment of AIDS. However, in this experiment, the drug was applied directly as a suppository. At the same time, oral antiviral drugs were used twice a day for two weeks for antiviral therapy.
A cervical smear examination within one month and three months after treatment showed a significant improvement in symptoms. 19 of the 23 women with severe precancerous lesions returned to normal, and the positive response rate was 91%. Contrast before and after X-ray treatment showed that the lesions in the cervical lesions were significantly smaller. No side effects were reported after administration.
Dr. Hampson said that the results of early clinical trials were unexpected. Many women with severe precancerous lesions recover their health in the short term after treatment. They are convinced that the treatment will be better after adjusting the treatment time and the optimal dose. They also hope that this method can change the status of cervical cancer prevention, especially in developing countries like Kenya.
