In the face of Enlightenment's lawsuit, Oxford Nanoporous Technologies said that the tiny pores called CsgG are the basis of its new equipment.
Oxford Nanoporous Technologies, a pioneer in the development of a new DNA analysis technology called nanopore sequencing, has been keeping a tight eye on the core of its products. However, following a patent infringement lawsuit from the sequencing industry giant Enlighten, the company revealed what drives its latest equipment, a bacterial hole that seems to cleverly avoid the challenge of Enlighten.
Nanopore sequencing is more convenient and inexpensive to analyze DNA than previous methods. Its principle is to measure the change in current produced by a single nucleotide through a small hole that is not much larger than the DNA itself. In 2014, Oxford Nano-Conduit launched its first commercial nanopore sequencer, a handheld device called MinION. Although the researchers praised the technology and worked to improve its accuracy, they could only speculate on how MinION succeeded in enlightening and other companies failing. MinION's small pore structure has always been a trade secret. In a lawsuit filed on February 23, Enlightenment said that Oxford Nanopores used a small pore derived from bacteria called M. smegmatis (Msp). Enlighten has obtained a patent license for the Msp system from the University of Washington and the University of Alabama, and claims that the Oxford Nanopore sequencer infringes these patents.
The lawsuit was a sad news for some researchers because they feared that they might lose access to the company's nanoporous products. “I hope that Enlightenment can release a platform, but what they are doing is launching a lawsuit.â€
Recently, Clive Brown, CTO of Oxford Nanohole, announced an upgrade to its equipment, a new hole described by the company as R9 in its speech. Brown said that R9 is a CsgG, a membrane protein derived from E. coli but found in many bacterial populations.
At the same time, the company also responded directly to the enlightened lawsuit. In a letter to the US International Trade Commission on March 8, Oxford Nano-Core denied all allegations of infringement and claimed that Enlighten is using its "unconfirmed rumors" to suppress its products in order to maintain itself. A monopoly in the field of traditional DNA sequencing.
