The study included nearly 632,000 Canadian adults and found that the lowest levels of "good cholesterol" - high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) - have a higher mortality rate due to heart disease or stroke within five years, while they are due to cancer Or the proportion of deaths from other diseases is higher than that of ordinary people.

In addition, there is no evidence that very high levels of HDL are desirable (above 90 mg/dL). The study found that people with high levels of HDL were more likely to die from non-cardiovascular causes than those with intermediate levels of HDL.

Lead researcher Dennis Ko said that low levels of HDL are known to be associated with increased all-cause mortality. But it is just a "mark" of other things, such as an unhealthy lifestyle or a poor health level. This also means that low HDL is unlikely to directly lead to heart disease.

Shapiro, a cardiovascular disease prevention expert at the American College of Cardiology, said that many people know that HDL is "good cholesterol," but they don't know that the medical community is getting rid of the idea of raising HDL levels because of several clinical trials.

The study tested vitamins, niacin, and certain drugs to increase HDL levels and found that although these treatments did increase HDL levels, they did not differ in the risk of heart disease. In addition, Shapiro said that studies have shown that genetically modified fish associated with HDL levels are not associated with cardiovascular risk. But no one said that doctors and patients should ignore the effects of low HDL levels. HDL levels below 40 mg/dL are associated with a high risk of heart disease.

Reasons for low HDL include sedentary habits, smoking, poor diet, and overweight. The researchers found that those with low HDL levels were more likely to die than those with HDL levels between 40 and 60 mg/dL.

People with low HDL tend to have lower incomes and a higher proportion of smoking, diabetes, and hypertension. After considering these factors, the researchers concluded that low HDL levels are still associated with high mortality.

Interestingly, the study also found that very high levels of HDL (90 mg/dL) were associated with an increased risk of non-cardiovascular death. Alcohol can raise HDL levels, which may be related to high levels of HDL.

Experts say that instead of trying to use drugs to raise HDL levels, it is better to have a healthier lifestyle.
