A few days ago, austriamicrosystems announced the availability of a new high-integration ASIC that will help Siemens' new computed tomography (CT) photodetector modules deliver higher resolution images at lower X-ray doses. Austriamicrosystems is the world's leading designer and manufacturer of high performance analog IC and sensor solutions for the consumer communications, medical electronics and automotive applications industries.
As part of Siemens' new Stellar CT photodetector module, austriamicrosystems' ASIC captures and digitizes images of the patient's body. It combines a high resolution photodiode with a low noise analog-to-digital converter (ADC) in a stacked die-type (3D integrated) configuration.
The new ASIC is the result of a collaboration between austriamicrosystems and Siemens. The collaboration began in 2005 with the aim of producing a new generation of photodetector modules based on the needs of oncologists and other medical professionals, and radically improving performance.
Medical professionals have two key requirements for new CT equipment:
· Higher resolution images for more accurate diagnosis of patient conditions · Lower X-ray doses reduce health risks when patients are scanned. The ASIC products achieve breakthrough performance in analog sensors, significantly reducing photodiodes and The noise of sensitive analog signals between ADCs. In order to achieve such a significant performance improvement, this ASIC development project draws on the many properties of Austrian microelectronics products. These include:
· Exclusive Austrian Microelectronics Intellectual Property (IP). The innovative two-stage ADC eliminates the time required for many ADCs to operate, so it can sample a complete input signal. This allows for a maximized linear output.
Precision gain and offset correction for high precision output from a wide range of dynamic optical inputs.
• Fine-tuning transistor characteristics for minimal noise. The ASIC hard mold is produced at the Austrian microelectronics wafer fab in Graz, Austria, and the company's professional production process has helped the circuit design of the product.
· 3D integration of mixed-signal products by applying new manufacturing processes. Austrian Microelectronics uses a stacked scorpion technology that integrates a photodetector and an ADC to replace the board-level long track from the sensor to the ADC in the previous generation of detector modules with a 250μm through-silicon via. This can help Siemens reduce the effects of noise and crosstalk on sensitive analog signals.
The Austrian microelectronics ASIC has been significantly improved in terms of linearity, noise reduction and speed. The new Stellar photodetector has been significantly improved in performance compared to its predecessor.
· Noise reduction in low dose scans is 20% compared to conventional detectors
· Image resolution reaches 0.5mm, which is 0.3mm better than traditional detectors
Dynamic range expansion for wider applications with low dose scanning • Standard power consumption is reduced from 1,000W to 300W.
This also reduces waste heat generation, further improving signal quality and image resolution.
Siemens Medical Business Unit said that in the Stellar detector, "for CT applications, Siemens pioneered the integration of photodiodes and ADCs in ASICs, thus shortening the signal path. The power consumption of the new ASIC is reduced by 85%. Less heat dissipation further reduces electronic noise."
Michael Leitner, Marketing Director of the Austrian Microelectronics Medical Division, said: "The successful delivery of new ASICs with breakthrough performance requires close cooperation and communication with customers. Austriamicrosystems began working with Siemens in 2005 to study the Stellar detector project. The understanding of high-end medical application requirements and Siemens' specific needs has led to the successful delivery of ASICs. Austin Microelectronics' new Stellar detectors are currently shipping."
