Beijing will adjust pediatric medical service prices

The Beijing Municipal Health Bureau declared that pediatrics belong to the “policy deficit” section. The enthusiasm for pediatrics in hospital development is not high. Before the education system has resumed pediatrics, Beijing will start by adjusting the price of pediatric medical services. Pediatricians are in short supply

According to Lu Ming, director of the Department of Medical Administration of the Beijing Municipal Health Bureau, last year the number of outpatient visits to paediatrics in the city reached 11 million and hospitalization was 130,000. Pediatric admissions are under intense pressure. However, the pediatric professional health care team is incompatible with the growing demand for pediatric care. Lu Ming said that there are a total of 1.95 million children in the city, and the number of permanent children is still increasing at an annual rate of 220,000. However, there are only 1,785 paediatricians and 2,105 nurses in the city. An average doctor has to assume the medical care tasks for more than 1,000 children. This is not a foreign child.

“Because the medical colleges have cancelled the pediatrics profession, the training of professionals has been greatly limited,” Lu Ming said. Over the past ten years, the city has added more than 400 pediatricians, an average of 40 new workers each year.

Medical service prices will be adjusted

Lu Ming said that because children use less drugs, there are few supplementary examinations, and there are few fee-charging items, medical income is significantly lower than other departments. As a “policy-related loss department” that goes hand in hand with infectious disease departments, paediatrics are increasingly being reduced to the edge departments of hospitals. Even Beijing Children's Hospital is relying on a large number of visits to ensure hospital operations.

Experts in the industry believe that in the absence of changes in the above status, medical students are obviously reluctant to engage in pediatrics. Medical colleges and universities have no incentive to develop pediatrics, and even if they rely on administrative measures, they cannot maintain their longevity. Only by changing the current distorted medical service pricing mechanism and allowing the pediatrician's reasonable value to be reflected can fundamentally change the status quo.

Increase pediatric investment
