Huanggang Port suspected genetically modified corn seed

Huanggang Customs revealed yesterday that the Customs officers had checked the entry hall at the Huanggang Port and seized nearly 20 passengers with suspected genetically modified corn seeds overnight. They seized nearly 30 kilograms of genetically modified corn seeds.

At around 1 a.m. in the early days, the entrance hall of the Huanggang Port was still brightly lit. A male passenger in his 40s caught the attention of customs officers. The Customs Officer told reporters that the passenger looked familiar and had previously been seized by the Customs for carrying articles illegally. Upon inspection, Customs officers found a suspicious object in the passenger's bag: a bag of corn seeds packed in plastic bags vacuum sealed, about two kilograms, without any identification. The passenger brigade said that this bag of corn seeds was carried by people. Subsequently, the customs officers specifically targeted the transit passengers.

As a result, as of around 5 a.m., customs officers actually seized nearly 20 passengers carrying corn seed. These corn seeds are hidden in carry-on baggage. Each person carries a quantity of about one to two kilograms, and the packaging is all simple packaging of vacuum plastic bags. There are no signs of delivery, inspection, branding, etc. In addition, all parties who entered the country with these corn seeds had recorded violation records. Most of them were “water passengers”, and some of the parties admitted that they had collected workers’ fees.

Later, customs officers transferred the corn seeds to the inspection and quarantine department for disposal. Initial inspection by inspection and quarantine personnel, these corn seeds suspected of genetically modified corn seeds. Once these untested and examined suspected genetically modified agricultural products enter the country, they will pose a high risk for food security. At present, the inspection and quarantine department is further processing.
