Stroke is a general term for Chinese medicine for acute cerebrovascular diseases. It is a kind of cerebral blood circulation disorder disease that is fainted, unconscious, accompanied by skewed mouth and poor language and half-length is the main symptom. Due to the high incidence of stroke, high mortality, high disability rate, high recurrence rate and many complications, the medical profession ranks it as one of the three major diseases that threaten human health.

A recent study by the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom showed that a newly developed MRI scan technology can detect stroke risk more specifically and is more accurate than existing methods.

Fat plaques in the arteries tend to block the arteries after rupture, causing hypoxia and stroke in the brain. The current method primarily measures the risk of a person's stroke by measuring the size of the carotid plaque. If the plaque is considered too large, the doctor will advise the patient to remove it by surgery. However, this method may miss plaques that are not too large but still have the possibility of rupture.

Oxford University scholars have teamed up with doctors at the John Radcliffe Hospital in the UK to develop an improved magnetic resonance imaging scan that allows for more comprehensive detection of plaque. This new technology can accurately identify plaques with a risk of rupture and those with relatively stable plaques, the former often contain more cholesterol.

According to a report published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, in order to assess the effectiveness of the new technology, the team used 26 techniques to detect plaque in the carotid artery before surgery in patients with stroke risk. Cholesterol levels, and then after they completed the surgery and removed the plaque, the team looked at the actual cholesterol levels of the plaques, and the results were consistent with the new technology test data.
