The University of Sydney, Australia, has announced that its researchers have developed a simple hand-held breathing test that monitors diabetes by detecting the levels of ketones in exhaled gases, and is expected to replace traditional fingertip blood collection methods in the future.

When the level of insulin in the human body is low, it is impossible to convert glucose into energy, which in turn begins to break down fat, and ketones are one of the by-products of fat decomposition. If ketones rise to unsafe levels, people with type 1 diabetes risk the risk of diabetic ketoacidosis, which is life-threatening.

According to reports, the current prototype has three components: an air sampling package, a sensor head and a signal processing unit. Researchers say they are working to compress the three components together to develop a portable device similar to an alcohol breath tester. This means that people with diabetes can be tested anywhere, anytime.

Do you believe it: you can monitor diabetes with a breath

In addition, small-scale studies have shown that this new device using sensing technology has doubled the sensitivity of traditional fingertip blood collection.

Associate Professor Yi Xiaoke, a nanophotonics expert who led the research team, said that monitoring and controlling blood sugar levels is a key task for people with diabetes. In addition to the advantages of fast test speed and high test accuracy, the new equipment does not contain needles and the process is painless and does not pose other risks to the patient.

The researchers said that clinical trials will be launched in the next few months to allow diabetics to try the device.
