A study published on the 5th issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association Cardiology Volume says that taking high doses of vitamin D monthly does not help prevent cardiovascular disease.
The study pointed out that people have found a correlation between vitamin D deficiency and cardiovascular disease, but previous clinical trials have not observed that vitamin D supplementation can help prevent cardiovascular disease, and this may be due to too little vitamin D supplementation.
To this end, New Zealand University of Auckland Robert Scrugg and others recruited more than 5,000 people to carry out trials, the participants aged 50 to 84 years, the average age of 66 years, of which 25% lack of vitamin D.
These subjects were randomly divided into two groups, one group taking vitamin D and the other placebo. Take 5 mg in the first month and 2.5 mg monthly thereafter.
After 3 years of follow-up, the researchers found that a total of 303 people in the vitamin D group had cardiovascular disease, a ratio of 11.8%; a total of 293 patients in the placebo group had cardiovascular disease, a ratio of 11.5%. The two groups in the incidence of cardiovascular disease There is no significant difference.
The two groups of participants were further subdivided into subgroups that lacked vitamin D or had a history of cardiovascular disease during the study. Similarly, the effects of vitamin D and placebo were not significantly different.
Sculgger et al. concluded that it is not supported to take high-dose vitamin D every month to prevent cardiovascular disease.
Tim Chico, a specialist in cardiovascular diseases at the University of Sheffield in the United Kingdom, commented that many people want to reduce the risk of disease by supplementing vitamins. However, there is evidence that this is a waste of time and money. It is better to eat more vegetables and improve health. However, some experts believe that although taking high-dose vitamin D every month does not prevent cardiovascular disease, it is not ruled out that the adjustment of dose, frequency, and time can have a preventive effect.
