On August 2, 2016, the Jump Transaction Simulation and Education Center, a medical research and innovation center in Peoria, Ill., announced that the center had just received a $10 million generous donation from its founder, William Shepard, to expand its 3D. Heart Library (3D Heart Library). It is reported that the donation will be given to the Shepard Medical Engineering Pension Fund at the Jump Trading Center. As early as 2012, William Shepard donated $5 million to the pension fund and was used to build a digital library of 3D congenital heart.
It is reported that this 3D heart library mainly collects digital models of human hearts to help with research on congenital heart diseases. Here the 3D model of each heart comes from the MRI data of a real patient. Specifically, this 3D printed heart model database allows pathologists and surgeons to use, analyze, and study real-time anatomical models to better prepare for their surgery.
According to Dr. Matthew Bramlet, a pediatric cardiologist at the Jump Center and a lead researcher in advanced medical imaging and modeling, the $10 million in funding will allow Jump to expand its programs and services from all sides. It is worth noting that the Jump Center also intends to use this funds to print 3D images of its own heart for patients without any charge. This means that when an MRI or CT scan of a child with congenital heart disease is sent from a hospital to Jump, the center will print it out in 3D for free, and the patient will not be charged any fees.
In addition, the grant will help Jump continue to work with the NIH 3D Print Exchange Heart Model Library, which provides accurate and high-quality scientific 3D printing models free of charge through its growing online database. Jump is also planning to expand its Advanced Imaging and Modeling (AIM) project, which aims to educate patients and their families through advanced imaging technologies, 3D models, virtual reality and augmented reality. In line with this principle, Jump will continue to provide clinicians with educational extensions on advanced 3D medical visualization technologies and promote them to the public in a variety of ways.
